An Aadhaar Card is a centralized identification document that is solely enough to prove one’s identity instead of carrying around several documents like birth certificates or ration cards. Let’s dive into the procedure to apply for an aadhar card online as an NRI.
In order to initiate essential transactions within India, an Aadhaar Card allows NRIs to speed up the process of KYC. Even so, the availability of registering Aadhaar Cards can be done via online mode especially for NRIs. Being an imperative document, it works as an identity proof almost everywhere because of its authenticity. The reason behind this is the fact that every individual gets their unique identification number after the biometric and demographic verification.
Can I apply aadhar card online as an NRI?
Primarily, an Aadhaar Card was restricted to Indian residents only. So, NRIs who wished to apply for this have to reside at least 182 days in India before getting enrolled for the application. Although, the Government tended to this issue and in July 2019 published an intimation to allow a quicker process for NRIs to attain an Aadhaar Card with the scheme called “Aadhaar on Arrival”.
Having said that, there are several ways through which NRIs can apply or register their Aadhaar Card even while sitting in their foreign home. The Government’s establishment of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) allows NRIs who hold Indian passports to enroll for an Aadhaar Card instead of the primary method wherein they have to reside in India for 182 days.
Procedure for an NRI apply for an Aadhaar Card?
The enrollment process and document verification for NRIs are the same as an Indian resident. The following steps will enlighten any NRI to apply for the same:
Step 1: Appointment
There are 2 ways through which an NRI can book their appointment. Although, it should be noted that the applicant has to visit the Aadhaar Centre in spite of the booking method.
Firstly, through online mode, a website for UIDAI is available wherein the NRI can book the slots by choosing the location and uploading Indian Phone Number.
Secondly, through offline mode, an NRI can visit the nearest Aadhaar Centre to set up a biometric appointment.
Step 2: Documents
There are some documents which have been approved by UIDAI in order to apply for an Aadhaar Card. These should be photocopied and self attested. Make sure to carry the original documents as well just in case. These documents are:
- Proof of Identity and Address: Indian Passport
- A photograph
- Other documents for evidence of residency with foreign country: Photocopy of stamped visa of the resident country
Step 3: Biometric Verification
After submitting the above documents and information, the next step is to visit the UIDAI Aadhaar Centre to record biometric details. A Government official will capture the demographic date like:
- Scan of all fingers
- Scan of irises of both eyes
- Photograph for the Aadhaar Id
An acknowledgment slip will be granted at the end of this verification.
After these steps are done, the applicant’s Aadhaar Card will be provided in 60-90 days. The UIDAI website also allows the applicants to track the status of their Cards after providing the enrolment number (EID).
The UIDAI website also allows the NRIs and Resident Indians to download their digital Aadhaar Card as a pdf. This way, the applicant does not have to wait for that much period of time as the digital Aadhaar is equally authentic and usable.
What is e-Aadhaar and its benefits?
As mentioned above, there is an availability of digital Aadhaar Cards on the UIDAI website formally known as e-Aadhaar. This is also a beneficial way to receive the document as it is considered a valid address proof with the same details like name, address, date of birth, and photograph along with the unique 12 digit identification number. It can also be used as legitimate proof in a situation wherein an individual has lost or damaged their physical cards. The following process can be done in order to get an e-Aadhaar:
- Open UIDAI website.
- Write a 12-digit identification number or the enrolment number present in the acknowledgment slip and time/date of application.
- Select ‘Get one Time Password’ and enter the OTP which you will receive on your registered mobile number.
- Enter the first four letters of your name and the full year of birth. This will open the digital pdf file of e-Aadhaar which can be easily downloaded.
